Inspired by The One Thousand and One Nights, " La Charmante aux Animaux " represents the year 2010, which theme is "Storytelling". On the square, the endless arabesques intertwine and guide us into a fantastic world.

Annie refers to the 146th episode of "Animal Fables," a farce of animals living in a marvelous island.

Chasseur, fils d'Adam
Hunter, Adam’s son
Oie paresseuse, Chameau peureux, Paon pieux
Lazy goose, Fearful camel, Pious peacock
The beautiful Scheherazade tells her stories to King Shahryar.

Annie also draws inspiration from wooden doors of the Fatimid dynasty, a vast Islamic empire, which reigned in North Africa in the 10th century.

The door Knockers of the angles symbolize respectively Persia, Syria, Egypt and North Africa and suggest the entrance to the Eastern world. Or, perhaps the doors opened to the narrative space…?

Annie’s orientalism is not limited to the superficial. For example, how to figure out the animals reminds the plane and lateral view of the oriental art. Only the men and a monkey, Annie's alter ego, are exempt from this rule.

 Mais, où se trouve-t-il?
But where is the monkey?

Here she is, at the foot of Scheherazade! Crouching, an opened book in her hands, probably One Thousand and One Nights, she seems to listen to the stories ...

  1. You offer us amazing insight into the derivation of this most magical design by Annie Faivre .
And the colourway , only one word:- gorgeous.

I bought a little gavroche in this design, and was so happy to look at the details . Many of these fabulous paired animals are exactly the same as those on my Legende de L'Arbre.
But no monkey on that one ....

And your famous Légendes de l'arbre...
Since you showed us your wonderful Légendes on SOTD, your colorway is on my radar. I saw already many other colorways, but yours is the best! Hope to see it more often!
