Plaza de Toros

First issue: 1993
Designed by Hubert de Watrigant

The bullfight is a battle to the death where mix shadow and light, life and death. Some people see in it a grand art, others a terrible savagery. However, what is certain is that the spectacle fascinated countless artists including Picasso. Hubert de Watrigant, the carré designer, is also one of them.

Thus he signed in 1993 a splendid square, called "Plaza de Toros," a remarkable representation of the whole festive side of bullfighting.

Coming from a long tradition, the origins of bullfighting remain opaque still today, sometimes attributed to the Greeks or Romans or even to the Moors, sometimes to feasts of the people or the aristocracy. At least, the present form dates from the 18th century Spain. Three hundred years later, the tradition continues.

With white handkerchief signal given by the president, the bullfight begins with the "paseo", a ceremonial parade of participants. After the sounding of trumpets, two riders enter the arena. Then come the three matadors followed by their assistants.

The time has come for the festivities! In general, there are six fights, two bulls for each matador. Each of the confrontation takes place in four parts.

First, the matador provokes the bull by making a few passes of the capote to evaluate its bravery and behavior. Then comes the "tercio de varas," where picadors, mounted on a horse, plunge the spears into the bull's neck.

The second stage is the "tercio de banderillas" during which the banderilleros involved. They plant in the bull's back banderillas (harpoons decorated with colored papers). The bull, out of exhaustion, regains some of his strength.

Matadors dans leur posture immobile./ Matadors in their immobile posture.

Then comes the third stage. The matador makes his appearance. He is face to face with an angry and wild bull. Even in this situation, his movement is controlled, highly codified, as an elegant choreography. Throughout the arena shouts Olé! The matador performs different series of passes with the muleta, the famous red cape. His spectacular virtuosity fascinates the public. A second of inattention can be fatal. Public’s enthusiasm reaches a fever pitch.

Then comes the climax: the killing of the bull by thrust. A heavy silence reigns, the time seems to stop. The bull collapses. After a moment, if his death is beautiful, the matador receives a standing ovation and a storm of applause.

Elements are arranged dynamically in a circle which evokes the arena. In the center of the composition, framed by banderillas, dominates a sumptuous matador jacket which finds its echo in epaulettes of the angles.

After the feast, the clash of emotions overwhelms the heart. Certainly, the courage of the matador who risks his life is sublime and heroic, but facing death let us dive into the abyss of the soul. Despite this sensitive theme, Hermes, without taboos, always open to new worlds, knew how to create a beautiful square.

The impressive dynamism, the incredible accuracy of drawings, the margin and improvised brush strokes contributing to the dramatization of the scene: all these elements make the painting of Hubert de Watrigant a very striking canvas.

Hubert was born in 1954 into a horse breeder and trainer family. Growing up in such an environment, the horses became his dear friends and the object of drawing, so his passion.

Thus, very young, Hubert expresses his vocation as a painter and then will organize many exhibitions not only in France but also worldwide. It was a matter of time that Hermès, former harness and saddle maker, called him. In 1982, the artist signed his first carré. The horse remains his favorite subject. The combination of dynamic graphics and figurative descriptions characterize his carrés.

Furthermore, Hubert develops his taste for bullfighting since his young age.

His home region of southwestern France is located at the foot of the Pyrenees, close to the Spanish border, so the region where the bullfighting culture is well established. Hubert assists to the fights for the first time at the age of 13. The clash of emotions, caused by the battle to the death between bullfighter and bull, will mark his life.

For Hubert, the horse is a passion of his life, or even more. Sowing autobiographical elements on the canvas, what he draws is so a slice of his own life.
